Cherished Luo Benga Artist Princess Jully, Passes Away

The Kenyan music community is in mourning following the death of popular Luo Benga musician Lilian Auma Aoka, known affectionately as Princess Jully.

She passed away on Saturday evening at Migori County Referral Hospital after a long illness that had seen her hospitalized intermittently for nearly nine weeks.

Princess Jully was well-loved for her hit songs, particularly “Dunia Mbaya,” which resonated with fans across generations. Her vibrant performances and compelling lyrics made her a respected figure in the Benga genre, contributing significantly to Kenya’s rich musical landscape.

Her son, Ogudah Bradley, expressed his heartbreak on social media, writing, “Mamana (my mother) Princess Jully is no more. It’s unbearably hard for me.”

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga expressed her sadness, stating, “I am deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Princess Jully. Despite facing many challenges, she has secured her place among fans of Luo Benga music. Her role in raising awareness of and fighting against HIV/AIDS through entertainment is unparalleled. May she rest in peace.”
