The Prior Informed Consent (PIC) and Mutually Agreed Terms (MAT) forms for the use of biological genetics, derivative resources, and associated biotic and abiotic co-variate information have been signed by the Ag. Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) Mr. Alex Lemarkoko.
Both scientists from the National Museum of Kenya (NMK), Drs. Esther Kioko and Beryl Bwong, were present for the brief ceremony.
The two documents were signed as part of the programme “Strengthening Taxonomic and Ecological Research for Enhanced Biodiversity Conservation in Kenya” and in accordance with the Nagoya Protocol’s guidelines and the Environment Management and Coordination Act of 1999’s (EMCA) Legal Notice 160, which governs research involving the transnational transfer of genetic materials and related traditional knowledge.
The research plan will assist Kenyan students pursuing doctoral and master’s degrees in China. It involves 18 universities, including 11 from China and 7 from Kenya.
