An activist has written to Chief Justice Martha Koome, requesting that open court sessions resume.
In a letter dated February 24, Enock Aura says that the usage of the internet is increasing the cost of accessing court services for Kenyans and court users.
Aura, through lawyer Harrison Kinyanjui, questions why money should still be provided for courthouses when the limits remain in place.
“Despite the Judiciary being granted massive amounts of taxpayers’ money to upkeep court rooms, the courts remain mainly empty across the country,” he said.
The man criticized Koome for attempting to eradicate in-person services in the judiciary since Covid struck the country three years ago.
He claims that Koome closed the courts arbitrarily when she ordered that court cases be conducted electronically rather than in person.
“Previously, the in-person Court sessions were closed to the public on the bases of the Covid-19 World Bank Project, but irrationally by your impugned Directive you now have constructively closed the Courts again,” he argued.
