China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi will travel to India from Monday to Wednesday for discussions on the disputed Himalayan border, Beijing’s foreign ministry announced on Saturday. The visit marks only the second high-level engagement of its kind since the deadly 2020 clash between Indian and Chinese troops in Ladakh, which severely strained bilateral ties.

The talks are expected to focus on de-escalating tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), where both sides have maintained heavy troop deployments despite a series of military and diplomatic negotiations. While some disengagement has occurred in recent years, several flashpoints remain unresolved.

The timing of Wang’s visit is seen as significant, coming ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled trip to China at the end of August. Modi will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, where he is expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping for the first time in seven years.

Observers say the back-to-back meetings could lay the groundwork for a possible thaw in relations between the two Asian powers, whose ties have been dominated by military tensions, disrupted trade, and mutual suspicion since the 2020 clash.

Both New Delhi and Beijing have emphasized the importance of dialogue, but analysts caution that progress will depend on whether the two sides can agree on practical steps to manage their contested border while pursuing broader regional cooperation.
