Chinese Firm Set to Launch Diatomite Mining in Baringo This July

A Chinese mining firm, Chuanshan International, has received a government license to commence diatomite extraction in Tiaty, Baringo County, starting July this year. The announcement was made Saturday by Cabinet Secretary for Mining and the Blue Economy, Hassan Joho, during a visit to the region.

The approval marks a significant step in the government’s efforts to unlock the economic potential of Kenya’s mineral-rich regions. While introducing the firm to local leaders and residents, CS Joho reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting responsible investment in the mining sector.

“As a government, we keep our doors open to genuine investors in the mining sector who prioritize the welfare of the communities where they extract minerals,” Joho stated. “As part of the Government’s commitment to fostering resource-based industrial development, I have today launched the first mining company in Tiaty for the exploitation of diatomite.”

Chuanshan International’s operations follow the successful fulfillment of regulatory and environmental requirements. The company’s activities are expected to create over 250 skilled jobs for local residents and promote foreign exchange through diatomite exports.

Tiaty Constituency, located in Kenya’s Rift Valley region, is known to be rich in various extractive resources including diatomite, fluorspar, and rubies. “If sustainably harnessed, these resources have the potential to transform the lives of the people and significantly boost the country’s GDP,” said Joho.

Company officials pledged to implement development initiatives aimed at uplifting the local community alongside their operations.

The event was attended by Mining Principal Secretary Harry Kimtai, Tiaty MP William Kamket, Baringo Woman Representative Flowrence Jematiah, and other leaders who expressed optimism about the economic opportunities the project would bring to the region.
