R&B singer Chris Brown has been remanded in custody following a court appearance over an alleged bottle attack at a London nightclub. The 36-year-old American artist was arrested at Manchester’s Lowry Hotel on Thursday and charged in connection with an incident that reportedly occurred at Tape nightclub in Mayfair in 2023.
Brown is accused of using a bottle to inflict grievous bodily harm on music producer Abe Diaw. He was in the UK ahead of a scheduled tour, with performances planned at Manchester’s Co-Op Live Arena and Cardiff’s Principality Stadium in June and July.
At Manchester Magistrates’ Court, Brown confirmed his full name, Christopher Maurice Brown, and his date of birth. When asked for his address, he responded with “The Lowry Hotel.” He appeared in court dressed in black tracksuit bottoms and a plain T-shirt.
District Judge Joanne Hirst ruled that the severity of the alleged offence required the case to be heard at Southwark Crown Court in London, where a hearing is scheduled for 13 June.
Despite his legal troubles, Brown’s fanbase showed strong support. Fans gathered outside the courthouse, including 35-year-old Candy from Manchester, who said she had followed the singer since she was 14 and cancelled her plans to attend the hearing. “I’m just here to support him,” she said. “I love his music, his voice. Even my children are fans now.”
Brown was due to perform in Amsterdam on 8 June before continuing his European tour, but his legal situation now casts uncertainty over those plans.
