CJ Koome Praises Judiciary Staff After Performance Improvement

According to Chief Justice Martha Koome, the Judiciary settled a total of 381,713 cases in the year 2021/2022, up from 294,837 in the preceding period 2020/2021

The Chief Justice, who launched the Performance Management and Measurement Evaluation Report 2021/2022 this afternoon, stated that the majority of courts and administrative units improved, with substantial achievements recorded in the Environment and Land Court.

“During the review period, the overall performance of the Judiciary was 93.71 percent, which marked a significant improvement over the previous year when it was 89.03 percent, which was largely attributed to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic that slowed down court operations at the time,” she said.

She said that significant improvements have been observed in several policies, such as the case clearance rate, which has increased from 83% in 2020/2021 to 95% in 2021/2022.

Koome further claimed that in the indicated period of 2021/2022, cases older than 3 years decreased by 11%, bringing the total number of cases reduced from 150,897 to 133,775.

Similarly, the number of cases older than a year was lowered by 7%, from 375,671 to 336,426.

“These results are quite encouraging and are a good indication that the different interventions being implemented are leading to improvements in service delivery,” she added.

CJ Koome urged Judiciary to continue to have regular dialogues regarding successful performance and service delivery improvement initiatives which will help maintain a high-performance culture.

“It is my expectation that we shall continue to embrace the culture of accountability through the sustained institutionalization of performance management in the Judiciary,” she urged.
