Clinical workers vow to continue with countrywide strike

Health workers have vowed to proceed with the planned strike accusing the government of failing to address their plight.- By Lynn Kyalo.

The chairman of the Kenya Union of Clinical Officers, Peterson Washira stated that the government has neglected the health workers and has done nothing to stop them from going on with the strike.

The union has confirmed that the strike is still on unless otherwise communicated by the union. The workers, who had assembled at the Uhuru Park in Nairobi, have also stated that without a risk allowance they are not going back to work.

The union states that the Frontline workers lack ppe’s,risk allowances, medical covers and other issues that they addressed in their strike notice and therefore unless the government resolves them.

The doctors, nurses and clinical workers have for long been complaining against lack of critical Personal protective equipment and better working conditions.

The nurses are protesting the delay of Kshs. 30,000 Risk Allowance to all Nurses, and for the government to Remit Statutory and Third-party deductions to the respective institutions.

Confirmation of contract nurses to Permanent and Pensionable Terms of Service, while provision of adequate and standard PPEs in all public hospitals remains a hot item on their demands.

The strike comes amid high numbers of COVID-19 infections currently raging the country, and increasing death toll as a result of the pandemic.
