In a surprise move, former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have thrown their support behind Vice President Kamala Harris, just hours after President Joe Biden’s stunning decision to withdraw from the presidential race.
The endorsement is seen as a significant boost for Harris, who is now the clear frontrunner in the Democratic primary.
In a statement, the Clintons praised Biden’s service as president, highlighting his accomplishments in leading the country through the pandemic, creating jobs, rebuilding the economy, and restoring America’s global standing. They also acknowledged Biden’s stated goal of “restoring the soul of our nation.”
However, they emphasized the urgent need to defeat Trump, citing his threat to democracy and the Constitution. “Now is the time to support Kamala Harris and fight with everything we’ve got to elect her,” they wrote. “America’s future depends on it.”
In 2016, Hillary Clinton became the first woman to win a major party’s nomination, paving the way for future generations of women in politics.
It is likely that former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle will also throw their support behind Harris, as reported earlier this year.
The Obamas have been relatively quiet during the primary season, but their endorsement would be a major boost for Harris.
