The owner of the building that collapsed and killed two people last week in Ruaka, Kiambu County, was apprehended at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) while attempting to flee the country.
Kiambu County Commissioner Joshua Nkanatha said at the scene of another building collapse in Ruiru town on Monday morning that the Ruaka building owner is currently being held at a Kiambu police station awaiting extradition to court.
According to Nkanatha, the owner of the property, along with other stakeholders such as county officials and engineers, may be charged with causing deaths and property damage to others.
“There is loss of life and damage of property, people died in Kirigiti and Ruaka so there are so many things that we are looking at,” the commissioner said.
Kiambu County has been on the lookout for collapsing buildings, with the most recent sinking on Monday at 4 a.m., hours after over 100 tenants were evacuated.
Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi led the evacuation operations on Sunday evening after the five-storey building right opposite Ruiru Police Station developed serious cracks.
