‘Confirm’ Gang Leader Denies Drug Trafficking Charges

Mr Dickson Macharia was charged with drug trafficking in a Nakuru court.

The accused was believed to be the leader of a criminal gang in Nakuru that has killed four women so far.

Mr Macharia was arrested on August 3 and is being investigated for his possible involvement in the murders of four women in Mawanga, Nakuru North sub-county, Nakuru County.

On Monday, he appeared before Principal Magistrate Isaac Orenge, where the prosecution preferred drug trafficking charges over the murder.
He however denied having 11.049kg of bhang worth Sh331,470

In an affidavit dated August 19, Inspector Japin Nyachae, the investigating officer, requested that Mr. Macharia be denied bail pending investigation.

Mr Nyachae requested an additional 14 days detention order while they await a report from the cybercrime unit.
“The investigations are incomplete.” “The accused is still a threat to the community, and if released, he may cause harm or interfere with witnesses,” Mr Nyachae said.

He went on to say that the suspect is a flight risk because his permanent residence is unknown.
Mr Nyachae claimed that investigators had not received an expert report from the Nairobi cybercrime unit and requested that the court order Safaricom to provide Mr Macharia’s M-Pesa account statements.
Nonetheless, Mr. David Mongeri, for the defense asked the court to release him on reasonable bond terms, claiming that he was not a flight risk.
He claimed that detectives had no reason to detain him further because they couldn’t connect him to any capital offense.

“The charge the accused person is currently facing is one for which bond can be granted.” “I beg the court to release him, and I intend to attend court and cooperate with detectives while he is out on bond,” Mr Mongeri said.

Mr. David Mongeri, Mr Macharia’s lawyer, asked the court to release him on reasonable bond terms, claiming that he was not a flight risk.
