The Government has launched the construction of a footbridge across the Likoni Channel.
The move is aimed at checking the rapid spread of Coronavirus in Mombasa and Kwale Counties, as well as reducing the pressure at the Likoni Ferry crossing.
An estimated 300,000 people cross over the Likoni channel, putting pressure on the Kenya Ferry Services.
With social distancing now mandatory, the ferries can barely manage the pedestrian traffic.
The bridge will be constructed by the Kenya National Highways Authority(KeNHA).
The works will officially begin today.
President Kenyatta ordered the construction of the bridge to ease the congestion at the Kenya Ferry Services.
The President is said to have expressed concern after he witnessed the chaos at the Likoni channel following the Government sanctioned curfew to curb the spread of the Coronavirus.
The emergency bridge is one of the measures put in place by the Government to check the spread of Covid-19 in Mombasa.
