Construction of World’s Largest Stadium Begins in Morocco

Morocco has begun the construction of Stade Hassan II, a vast football arena set to become the largest in the world with a planned capacity of 115,000.

The project, designed by renowned stadium specialists Populous in partnership with Paris-based architects Oualalou + Choi, will anchor Morocco’s preparations as a joint host of the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal.

Located in El Mansouria, Benslimane province, some 38km north of Casablanca, the stadium will rise from a 100-hectare site, with groundworks already in preparation.

Its design takes inspiration from Morocco’s traditional “moussem” gatherings, with a vast tent-like roof creating a dramatic silhouette against a forested backdrop.

Inside, three steep tiers at either end will accommodate 29,500 spectators apiece, promising a cauldron-like atmosphere.

Alongside the pitch, five levels of hospitality will provide space for 12,000 guests, including VVIP, VIP, and box seating, as well as a royal box.

The roof, an intricate aluminium lattice, will be supported by 32 monumental stairways, each framing raised gardens suspended 28 metres above the ground.

Further botanical gardens will weave greenery throughout the outer concourses, transforming the stadium into what designers describe as an “oasis” of sport and nature.
