Convicted Former Olympics Boss Dies At 88

Lamine Diack, the former head of the International Olympic Committee who was convicted of corruption last year, died on Friday at the age of 88 at home in Senegal, according to his son.

Diack served as the president of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) from 1999 to 2015, during which time he was convicted of leading a gang that covered up Russian doping in exchange for millions of dollars in payments.

He was condemned to four years in prison by a French court in 2020, however, he was never imprisoned. He was kept under house arrest until he was released on bond.

“He died of a natural death at home at 2 a.m.,” his son, Massata Diack, said.

Diack’s lawyers had earlier stated that he was in ill condition and that if he was imprisoned, he would die.
