Cooperative University ICT Officer Caught Soliciting 50K Bribe To Fix Exam Results

Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested Evans Matiro Watenya, an ICT officer at the Cooperative University of Kenya, for allegedly demanding a Ksh 50,000 bribe from a student.

The 25-year-old’s arrest follows shocking revelations that the student’s examination results had been altered on the university portal just two months before her graduation.

According to EACC spokesperson Eric Ngumbi, the female student approached Watenya after discovering her academic standing had mysteriously dropped from Second Class Honours, Upper Division to a lower division. In a troubling exchange, Watenya reportedly told the student that the only way to rectify the error was to part with the hefty sum, dismissively referring to it as “tea.”

Frustrated and unable to gather the full amount, the student managed to raise Ksh 30,000 but ultimately opted to report the matter to the EACC, leading to Watenya’s arrest on Friday evening after swift investigations.

This incident raises alarming questions about integrity within academic institutions and highlights EACC’s ongoing commitment to tackling bribery and corruption. The Commission has urged other victims to come forward and report similar incidents for investigation.
