Couple Arrested for Abandoning One-Month-Old Baby in Migori

A couple has been arrested after allegedly abandoning their one-month-old baby near Chamgiwadu Trading Centre in Rongo, Migori County on Sunday, sparking public outrage and concern.

According to village elder George Oloo, the infant was discovered by local residents just a few metres from a house in the area. The baby was rescued and taken to safety before authorities were alerted.

Oloo stated that initial investigations revealed the woman had separated from her husband several months ago due to marital disputes. She reportedly arrived alone at the scene, placed the baby near the house, and then disappeared.

“The woman came alone with the baby and left him just a few metres from the house. We managed to rescue the child,” said Oloo.

Following the incident, both the woman and the man were arrested and handed over to police at the Chamgiwadu post. Authorities have confirmed that the two will face charges of child abandonment.

Police have not disclosed further details about the couple’s identity but said the baby is safe and in temporary protective custody as investigations continue. Local officials and children’s welfare advocates have condemned the act and called for stronger support systems to prevent similar cases.
