Court declares nationwide lecturers’ strike illegal

The Employment and Labour Relations Court declared the ongoing lecturers’ strike unprotected by law and directed UASU officials to return to the negotiations table.

Lecturers from the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) went on strike on Tuesday, asking that the government comply with the demands outlined in the 2012-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement.

It was the Court’s considered opinion that Lecturers should welcome negotiations with the government to allow room for developing a favourable Return-To-Work formula.

The case will be mentioned on November 28, 2024.
