A Thika court has fined a man identified as Samuel for drunk driving and operating an unroadworthy vehicle, following his arrest in the Blue Post area of Kiambu County.
Samuel, who was driving a Nissan vehicle at the time, was stopped by traffic police and subjected to a breathalyzer test, which recorded an alcohol level of 82.9 micrograms—well over the legal limit. He pleaded guilty to the charge of driving under the influence.
He also faced a second charge for driving a vehicle with a faulty tyre. While he initially denied the charge, Samuel later admitted it, telling the court that the worn spare tyre had been installed as he returned from visiting his sick mother, who depends entirely on him.
The prosecution presented the breath test results as evidence in court.
In sentencing, the magistrate imposed a fine of KSh 15,000 or eight months’ imprisonment for drunk driving. For the unroadworthy vehicle, he was fined an additional KSh 10,000 or six months in jail. Samuel was granted 14 days to file an appeal.
