Court Grants 10 Days Detention for Serving Officers in Ammunition Trafficking Case

The Milimani Law Courts has ordered six serving officers drawn from the National Police Service and the Kenya Prisons Service to be detained for 10 days over allegations of running a cross-border ammunition trafficking ring.

Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina delivered the ruling on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) sought to have the suspects held for 14 days to allow further investigations.

The officers; Ileli Cyrus Kisamwa, Samson Muriithi Mutongu, Wesley Sang, Charles Lotira Exidor, Paul Kipketer Tonui and Isaac Kipngetich were arrested on September 26 in Nairobi and Eldoret.

Investigators said they recovered a Remington Rand pistol, 19 assorted magazines, and ammunition linked to the group.

According to an affidavit by Corporal Hillary Kimuyu, the officers are suspected of operating a coordinated network in which some ferried ammunition from Nairobi stores while others allegedly controlled armoury keys and facilitated transportation to Lodwar and Lokichogio near the Kenya–South Sudan border.

The prosecution argued that freeing the suspects would risk interference with witnesses, tampering with evidence still in armouries, and possible flight. The DCI added that ballistic tests, phone forensics, and retrieval of armoury records are pending, with the likelihood of more serious charges including robbery with violence and murder being preferred.

Magistrate Onyina ruled that while the request for 14 days was excessive, the gravity of the allegations touching on national security justified custodial orders. The six will remain at Capitol Hill Police Station until October 9, 2025, when the case will be mentioned.
