Court Halts Teachers’ Strike Amid Salary Dispute

The Employment and Labour Relations Court has temporarily halted the nationwide teachers’ strike, following a petition by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

The court has scheduled a mention of the case for September 5, providing a temporary respite for students whose education had been disrupted by the strike.

The ruling comes as a relief to students facing critical examinations later in the term, who were left stranded by the strike organized by the Kenya National Union of Post Primary Teachers (KUPPET).

The disruption had raised concerns over the potential impact on learning outcomes.

In response to the ongoing strike, the Treasury released Ksh 13.5 billion intended for teachers’ salaries.

This allocation covers payments for July and August, aiming to address one of the central grievances of the teachers.

The funds’ release is seen as a step towards resolving the conflict over the failure to honor the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos expressed hope for a resolution through continued stakeholder engagement.

He extended well-wishes to students as they return to school for the third term, emphasizing the importance of growth and learning opportunities.

Teachers’ unions have not yet commented on the court’s decision.
