Court orders fresh census in Mandera, Wajir and Garissa, quashes 2019 count

The High Court in Garissa has ordered fresh census within a year in Mandera, Garissa and Wajir Counties.

This Comes after the court nullifies Mandera, Wajir and Garissa 2019 Population data.

On the 28th of January 2025 High Court ruling, the court said that the 2019 Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) Census results for Mandera, Wajir, and Garissa counties were unconstitutional.

The Court cited significant irregularities in the exercise.

For instance, the court concluded that the KNBS failed to uphold fundamental data integrity standards during the 2019 census leading to inaccurate population figures for the affected counties.

The impact of the Judgement is that all constitutional bodies including I.E.B.C are barred from using the disputed data census for official purposes.

In the case, Hon Abdullahi Bashir Sheik and 24 others had sued the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics saying they mislead the general public with the collected data and that the due process was never followed during the exercise.
