Court has postponed plea taking for a Nairobi senior police officer accused of soliciting Ksh 10,000 bribe to release a woman allegedly in police custody.
Susan Wambui Muiruri was arrested by officers from the EACC on Thursday, July 27, 2023, after investigations placed him at the scene of crime and she was expected to be arraigned at Milimani Anti-Corruption Court today.
However, when the file was placed before the Magistrate it was confirmed that the suspect was hospitalized hence she could not make it to Court.
The arrest came after the Director of Public Prosecutions concurred with the recommendations of the Commission to apprehend the Police Inspector to face charges of soliciting and receiving a bribe of Kes.10,000 from the complainant, when she served at Kasarani Police Station, in order to facilitate the release of his girlfriend who had been arrested and held at the Station.
The suspect also said the demanded bribe was a fee to facilitate ‘erasing’ particulars of the arrested person from the “digital OB.”
In the case, Ms Muiruri who is the inspector of police in Zimmerman Police Post, Kasarani Police division, received the Kes. 10,000 bribe from the complainant on 25 April 2021 by Mpesa after she granted freedom for the complainant and his kin.
According to the EACC, the complaint had also been put in cells after the Police Inspector accused him of “kuwa mjuaji na kuleta kichwa ngumu na mang’aa kwa polisi” when he went to inquire why his girlfriend was arrested.
The plea was deferred to August 9, 2023.
