Court Reinstates Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo, Declares Impeachment Null and Void

Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo has been reinstated after the High Court in Meru declared his impeachment unconstitutional, citing blatant contempt of court and procedural irregularities by the Isiolo County Assembly.

Delivering the landmark ruling on Friday, Justice Nyaga Mbogo held that conservatory orders issued on June 25, which explicitly barred the Speaker and Clerk from processing the motion, were still in force at the time of the impeachment and had not been set aside.

“The orders dated June 25 are still in force,” the judge said. “Any acts by the respondents or any other party, in defiance of the court order, shall be null and void.”

Despite the binding court directive, 16 out of 18 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) went ahead with the impeachment vote on Thursday, June 26, citing allegations of gross misconduct. The resolution was even forwarded to the Senate, prompting swift legal action by Guyo’s team.

Justice Nyaga took issue with the blatant disobedience, summoning both the Speaker and Clerk of the Assembly to appear before the court in person on Monday, July 1, to answer to contempt of court charges.

“Having been cited for contempt of court, the first respondent and the contemnor are hereby ordered to appear in person and be accompanied by counsel,” the court directed.

Legal experts say the ruling not only reinstates Guyo’s leadership but also reaffirms the supremacy of judicial authority over political power plays.

The decision is a stinging rebuke to the County Assembly, which now faces legal scrutiny for flouting due process and constitutional order.
