Court Suspends Impeachment Motion Against Governor Mwangaza

The Meru High Court has suspended the hearing of an impeachment motion against Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

The impeachment motion by Abogeta West MCA Dennis Kiogora, who is also the minority whip, was scheduled to be tabled, debated, and voted on today, November 30.

In his ruling, Justice Wamae Cherere stated that the Meru County Assembly did not follow proper procedure in initiating the motion.

“That conservatory order be and is hereby issued prohibiting the respondents from discussing, debating, or in any way whatsoever dealing with the impeachment motion against the petitioner scheduled for debate on November 30,” read the ruling in part.

Cherera believes the impeachment motion is flawed, as are Mwangaza’s constitutional rights.

Mwangaza moved to court last week seeking orders to bar the County Assembly from debating her impeachment motion.

The Governor argued, through her lawyer Elias Mutuma, that the publication of the impeachment motion was called and signed by a stranger in the assembly acting as the clerk.

She also told the court that the assembly demonstrated a predetermined mindset on the impeachment since 68 out of 69 MCAs approved the motion.

The impeachment motion was tabled by Abogeta West MCA Dennis Kiogora on November 21.

The case will be heard on 25th January 2023.
