A late-night fire incident at Kenilworth Road on Friday sparked fears ahead of Luton Town’s crucial Championship clash with Coventry City.
The blaze, which broke out in the stadium’s laundry room, was swiftly contained by Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue, allowing the club to confirm that Saturday’s fixture will proceed as scheduled.
Photos and videos of smoke rising from the ground circulated on social media, prompting widespread concern from fans and pundits. However, in an official statement, Luton Town assured supporters that the situation was under control and that no significant damage had occurred.
“Smoke was found to be coming from a small appliance that had caught fire in the stadium’s laundry room, which was contained within that area and dealt with swiftly,” read the club’s statement. “We thank Beds Fire & Rescue, club partners and staff for their quick intervention to ensure the stadium remains safe.”
The match itself holds huge significance, with Luton fighting to avoid back-to-back relegations following a tough return to the Championship. The Hatters currently sit 22nd, level on points but behind on goal difference, with just two matches remaining.
Saturday’s opponents, Coventry City, are also battling for position at the other end of the table, making the clash one of the weekend’s most pivotal encounters. Despite the fire scare, all eyes will be on Kenilworth Road as both sides prepare for a high-stakes showdown.
Luton will end their season away at West Brom next week in what could be a do-or-die fixture.
