Mandera becomes the fifth county to lock its doors after the Health CS Mutahi Kagwe announced restriction of movement in and out of the county- By Prudence Wanza.
The move is aimed at combating the spread of Coronavirus in Mandera which has recorded 8 cases in a span of two weeks.
The first two cases in Mandera were as a result of two individuals who traveled from Mombasa and later turned out to be positive.
Over 60 people were put into quarantine but later 32 of them escaped from the facility which may the reason for the spread of the disease in the county.
Over the last 24 hours Kenya has tested 707 samples out of which 7 were found positive bringing the total number of infections to 303.
6 of the new cases were from Mombasa while 1 is from Nairobi.
However, 9 more patients have recovered raising the total number of recoveries to 83.
The ministry of health is aiming at carrying out 250,000 tests by the end of June and mass testing in high-risk areas and health workers. 100,000 households are set to be tested through community-based surveillance.
The CS has warned those escaping from quarantine centers, the recent one being of individuals who escaped KMTC quarantine centre. He has also called upon Kenyans to report such individuals.
“I urge those individuals who escaped from KMTC quarantine facility to surrender themselves back… they render themselves to all kind of things including being mopped by people,” he said
Kagwe has urged Kenyans to take personal responsibility and help the government the towards winning the war against the disease.
” We can defeat this disease if we exercise self discipline and if we become our brothers keeper, ” he said.
