COVID patients in ICU drop to 30, as Kenya nears 100,000 cases

Kenya has recorded an additional 80 Covid-19 positive cases in the last 24 hours. This pushes the country’s total caseload to 99,162 in 1,125,679 Covid-19 tests.  – By Gerald Gekara.

In a statement on Sunday, January 17, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe announced that the cases were recorded from 3,733 samples had been tested over the same period.

Of the positive cases, 48 are male and 32 are female. The youngest is an eleven-year-old child while the oldest is 81.

In terms of County distribution; Nairobi led in terms of cases, with (62), Meru (4), Busia, and Kwale (3), Kiambu 2, while Kericho, Kilifi, Makueni, Mombasa, Nyandarua and Uasin Gishu recorded (1) case each.

The Health Ministry congratulated health workers after recoveries shot up by 26 patients to stand at 82,350. The Home-Based Care Program discharged 24 patients, while 2 have been discharged from various hospitals.

Currently, there are 699 patients admitted in various health facilities countrywide and 1,642 on Home Based Isolation and Care. 

30 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 14 of whom are on ventilatory support, and 13 on supplemental oxygen. Three are on observation. 

Another 13 patients are separately on supplementary oxygen with 12 of them in the general wards. There is one patient in the High Dependency Unit (HDU)
