CS Aden Duale Announces New Waste Management Regulations

Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has unveiled new regulations to improve garbage disposal across Kenya.

Speaking during Mazingira Day, Duale announced the introduction of a colour-coded waste bin system, requiring households and businesses to sort waste into categories such as organic, dry, and wet.

“Next week, I will gazette the colour coding of garbage. Every home and facility must have separate bins for different types of waste,” Duale stated, highlighting the government’s commitment to enhancing waste management.

Duale also warned garbage collection companies against illegal dumping practices, particularly along the Nairobi River.

He emphasised that the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) will monitor waste from homes to designated dumping sites to ensure compliance.

“NEMA will trace waste, and we will question companies contracted to dispose of garbage,” he said.

Nairobi generates around 3,000 metric tonnes of waste daily, most of which is dumped at the Dandora dumpsite, which has been over capacity since 2001.

Duale called for transparency from private waste collectors, stressing that dumping in Nairobi River must stop.

The new rules aim to streamline waste disposal processes and improve environmental conservation efforts across the country, with the government vowing to hold collectors accountable for illegal dumping practices.
