Former President Uhuru Kenyatta was chastised by Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale for “castigating police officers on official duty” at the Jubilee Headquarters, where tear gas was lobbed to disperse several ODM leaders and supporters.
Duale said on Twitter that it was “appalling and despicable” for a retired President to attack officers over a falling party (Jubilee).
“It’s appalling the depths the former President has fallen to the extent he rudely castigates police officers on official duty protecting life and property. It is despicable to see a former President who after having served two full terms reduce his stature by fighting over a shell of a party that presided over misrule, wanton looting of public coffers and extrajudicial killings during the infamous rogue handshake regime,” the CS said.
The former member of Jubilee, said the party is “a pale shadow of its former self” adding that ” Uhuru should cease muddying his image by trying to resuscitate a dead party and leave the tussle to elected MPs”.
“The former President should respect his standing in society and emulate the former Presidents by keeping off active politics and sullying his name by engaging in petty politics,” Duale said.
Uhuru made an unexpected visit to the party headquarters in Kileleshwa on Wednesday evening, following wranglings between supporters of Kanini Kega and Jeremiah Kioni over party leadership.
Kanini Kega attempted to gain access to the office in an attempt to take over.
Uhuru strongly condemned the police handling the standoff, accusing them of using tear gas in what he called a “forceful takeover.”
“You are throwing teargas at them so you can take the house by force that is not right,” Uhuru said.
