CS Kinyanjui: Sh16 billion Taifa Gas project to be operational within two months

Once operational, the facility will add 30,000 metric tonnes of LPG storage and distribution capacity, with potential future expansion to 45,000 tonnes.

Investments, Trade, and Industry Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui has announced that the Sh16 billion Taifa Gas LPG project in Mombasa is expected to be operational by late March or early April 2026.

During a site visit to the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone (SEZ) on January 29, 2026, the CS confirmed the following progress:

Once operational, the facility will add 30,000 metric tonnes of LPG storage and distribution capacity, with potential future expansion to 45,000 tonnes.

The plant is expected to create at least 120 jobs in its first stage and position Kenya as a regional hub for gas distribution to neighboring countries.

The increased storage is intended to lower the cost of cooking gas and stabilize supply, directly supporting the government’s clean energy agenda.

The project has reached this milestone after surviving several legal challenges from local residents and environmental groups, with the National Environment Tribunal recently dismissing a fresh bid to halt construction.

President William Ruto is expected to officially inaugurate the terminal upon its completion in March 2026.
