Chinese companies have emerged as Kenya’s go-to contractors whenever infrastructure projects have been hatched, because of their high speed and relatively lower cost
Transport CS Macharia confessed this while answering allegations that the government hires solely Chinese contractors for major projects.
"When people say we're giving the Chinese, am I going to offer a project just to avoid giving the Chinese at Ksh.18 billion when it could have been done for Ksh.7 billion?" the CS asked Citizen TV in an interview on Monday.
In addition to their lower prices, the Chinese have shown to be faster in completing projects than their competitors, according to the CS.
"They are lightning-fast when it comes to making decisions and putting initiatives into action." The President inaugurated the Nairobi Expressway in October 2019, and it is currently 80 per cent complete," he stated.
"At the same time," CS Macharia said, "we were contemplating the Rironi-Mau summit road with another European group." We began negotiations in September 2016 and have yet to complete them."
CS Macharia also mentioned the Kenol-Sagana-Marua motorway, claiming that the Chinese outperformed their European counterparts due to reduced costs.
