CS Magoha directs schools to reopen in January 2021, No KCPE

Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has finally bowed to Coronavirus pressure, announcing the cancellation of KCPE, KCSE national examinations – By Gerald Gekara.

While addressing the media on the decisions met by the government, Magoha said that the COVID-19 rendered the school calendar lost.

Standard Eight and Form Four students will instead sit their exams in 2021, while the rest would be readmitted afresh in their respective classes on January 2021.

He added that normal school programs will resume when the virus curve is expected to have flattened.

Technical and vocational education and training (Tvet) institutions as well as colleges will re-open in September.

This will however be done under strict adherence to the Ministry of Health’s guidelines for containing the virus. The reopening will be based on the status of coronavirus infection in the country.

“Schools should only reopen when the daily percentage of confirmed positive COVID-19 cases have reduced consistently for at least 14 days (which is evidence that the country has passed the peak)” said Magoha in a statement.

The ministry is faced with an uphill task of testing over 350,000 teachers in the country, in preparation for the resumption of learning activities.

Among other laid down procedures, CS Magoha added that the government intends to give each child two masks.

“We want to get direction from the World Health Organization because every child back in school must wear a mask.”
