The government imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in parts of Garissa County over rising cases of insecurity fuelled by land conflicts.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said the 30-day curfew took effect on Wednesday evening, and will see residents of the affected areas barred from leaving their houses from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am.
These areas include Bulla Othan and Bulla Mzuri (Waberi East location), Bulla Takawal (Waberi West location) and Bulla Rakhama (Iftin location); all in Garissa Central.
All land surveys, adjudications, issuance of title deeds, and transactions in the said areas have also been suspended until further notice, while additional security agents have been deployed in an effort to quell the rising insecurity incidents.
He ordered immediate recruitment and deployment of chiefs to Tawakal and Bulla Mzuri locations within the disturbed areas.
Elected leaders from the area have been invited to an urgent meeting to deliberate on peace restoration and lasting inter-clan coexistence.
23 suspects have been arrested in connection to the insecurity cases which have led to loss of life and destruction of property in the area.
