CS Murkomen Appoints Capt. William Kipkemboi As MD of Kenya Ports Authority

    Kipchumba Murkomen, Cabinet Secretary for Transport, has appointed Captain William Kipkemboi Ruto as Managing Director of the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), effective March 10, for a three-year term.

    For the past three years, the position of Managing Director at the KPA has been vacant. During this time, the Board made several acting appointments to the position to ensure the continuity of the Authority’s operations.

    The KPA Board of Directors has made numerous unsuccessful attempts to fill this position competitively.

    On December 23, 2022, the KPA Board of Directors conducted a recruitment exercise that drew 75 applications.

    “After a rigorous and intensive recruitment process, the Board of Directors has this morning submitted a report and recommendation to my office for the appointment of Captain William Kipkemboi Ruto, having attained the highest aggregate score from the interview process,” Murkomen said in a statement.

    Captain William Ruto has a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a specialisation in Strategic Management from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

    He is an associate fellow of the Nautical Institute (AF-NI) and a member of the International Harbour Master’s Association (UK), and he graduated from South Tyneside Marine College with the highest qualification as a Ship Captain (Class 1 Master Mariner). Capt.

    Ruto is a seasoned mariner who began his career as a Cadet Marine Deck Officer at KPA in 1991 before rising through the ranks to become a General Manager, Operations, and later a Harbour Master. He was the General Manager of the Kisumu Port prior to this appointment.
