CS Ogamba visits teachers injured in tragic road accident

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has given an update on the condition of teachers injured in a tragic road accident that occurred on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at City Primary School in Ngara, Nairobi, during teachers’ union elections.

Taking to his official X account on Monday, February 2, 2026, CS Ogamba said he, alongside Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chairperson Jamleck Muturi, Acting TSC Chief Executive Officer Evaleen Mitei, and Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Secretary General Akello Misori, had visited the injured teachers who are currently receiving treatment in various hospitals.

“Together with TSC Chairperson Dr. Jamleck Muturi, Acting CEO of TSC Ms. Evaleen Mitei, and KUPPET SG Mr. Akello Misori, we have today visited the victims of yesterday’s tragic accident, in which a public service vehicle rammed into teachers participating in union elections at City Primary School, Ngara, Nairobi,” Ogamba stated.

“The injured are receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi West Hospital, and Aga Khan Hospital. The accident claimed two lives and left 26 others injured.”

The accident occurred when a public service vehicle rammed into teachers who had gathered at City Primary School to participate in union elections. The incident claimed the lives of two teachers and left 26 others injured.

“We wish the injured a speedy recovery and extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives,” he stated.

In a press statement issued on the night of Saturday, January 31, 2026, Ogamba confirmed the tragic incident and expressed condolences to the affected families.

One teacher died on the spot, while another succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment in the hospital. At least 26 other teachers sustained injuries and are currently undergoing medical care.

Ogamba had also revealed that the Ministry of Education was working closely with the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, the Ministry of Roads and Transport, the Ministry of Health, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), and the county governments of Nairobi and Nyeri to ensure a coordinated response to the incidents.
