Former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo will be laid to rest on December 30, 2025, following a decision reached by his family and burial committee after consultations.
Speaking on behalf of the committee, former Vihiga senator George Khaniri said relatives had agreed on both the burial date and location after resolving questions arising from Jirongo’s multiple residences.
The family has settled on Lumakanda as the final resting place, where Jirongo will be buried alongside his parents.
“We have agreed on the burial date which has been set tentatively for December 30, 2025,” Khaniri said.
“The family has also agreed that he will be buried at his Lumakanda home next to his father and mother’s grave.”
Jirongo died on Saturday December 13 following a road accident in the Karai area of Naivasha in Nakuru County. He was 64.
Police said the former legislator was driving his private vehicle along the Nairobi Nakuru Highway when it collided head on with a passenger bus at around 3.00 am.
Rift Valley traffic enforcement officer Sarah Chumo said Jirongo had been travelling from Nakuru towards Nairobi at the time of the crash.
The news of his death has drawn an outpouring of grief from family members political allies and residents of Lugari and the wider Kakamega region. Many have described him as a generous figure whose philanthropy extended well beyond politics.
At his home emotions ran high as relatives and villagers gathered in mourning. Women could be heard wailing while small groups spoke quietly as they struggled to process the sudden loss.
“It is a shock to the family,” said a female relative through tears. “We did not expect this to happen especially during the festive season when we would normally be together.”
Jirongo served as Lugari MP between 1997 and 2002 under Kanu before reclaiming the seat in 2007 after forming the Kenya African Democratic Development Union.
He later made bids for senator governor and president marking a long and often unconventional political career that left a distinct imprint on western Kenya.
