Cyrus Oguna Defends Jubilee’s Housing Projects

But according to Government Spokesperson Cyrus Oguna, the good Professor did not have his facts correct.

Government Spokesperson Cyrus Oguna responded to sentiments by political analyst Prof Alfred Omenya, who during the post-debate analysis of Nairobi Gubernatorial Debate, stated that “Jubilee Administration has failed to deliver on housing”.

According to Oguna, the good Professor did not have his facts correct.

“The current status of Affordable Housing project is as follows: 250,000 housing units have been completed across the country. -Another 650,000 are in the pipeline, way more than the 500,000 promised by Jubilee Administration,” he stated.

The houses are located in Park Road, Jevanjee, Pangani, Mukuru, Soweto ‘B,’ Meteorological Site, Buxton Point (Mombasa), Bondeni (Nakuru), Mavoko (Machakos), Kiambu, Embu, and other areas, according to Oguna.

Oguna went on to say that this is one of the programs that has outperformed expectations and has now gained its own momentum, attracting the private sector to join in, leaving the government to provide facilitation and oversight.

The affordable housing program was launched in 2017 as one of the ‘Big Four Agenda’ key pillars. The government intended to provide 500,000 by 2022.

The program is offered by the government through the Boma Yangu Online Platform, which facilitates registration for housing allocations and has received approximately 329,714 applications as of July 2022.

The platform accepts three types of contributions: statutory contributions with a monthly cap of Ksh2,500 per employee, voluntary monthly contributions, and joint contributions.

Contributions to the Housing Fund can be accessed as soon as 15 years after a member makes their first contribution or reaches retirement age.
