Danish PM Warns US Takeover of Greenland Would Destroy NATO

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen declared Monday that a U.S. military takeover of Greenland would mean the end of the NATO alliance.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen declared Monday that a U.S. military takeover of Greenland would mean the end of the NATO alliance.

Her comments came in response to President Donald Trump’s renewed push to bring the strategic, resource-rich Arctic island under American control, following the weekend operation in Venezuela.

The overnight capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife by U.S. forces on Saturday stunned the international community and heightened alarm in Denmark and Greenland—a semiautonomous Danish territory and, by extension, a NATO member.

Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen strongly condemned Trump’s remarks, warning of catastrophic consequences. Their stance drew expressions of solidarity from numerous European leaders.

“If the United States chooses to attack another NATO country militarily, then everything stops,” Frederiksen told Danish broadcaster TV2. “That includes our alliance—and with it, the security we have known since the end of World War II.”
