The Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) has distanced itself from recent statements made by Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula, a member of the party.
In a tweet on Monday morning, Savula stated that an agreement was signed by his party and the ODM for him to share powers with Governor Fernandes Barasa.
Following that was a message from the DAP-K party, which stated that it is fully behind Governor Barasa, dismissing Savula’s “sideshows and blackmails.”
“As a coalition partner, we shall support @BarasaFernandes to deliver to Kakamega County people on his promises pegged on #MaendeleoNaUsawa devoid of sideshows and blackmails. We have an agreement to deliver devolution fruits to the people after the swearing-in on Thursday,” DAP-K said.
This came after Savula stated that he should be referred to as co-governor rather than deputy governor because he and Governor Barasa have divided the County Government into two.
“Don’t let anyone lie to you that Savula returned to deputyship, we have divided the county government and the government of Kakamega into two. Barasa has taken half and Savula has taken half,” he said in a tweet on Monday morning.
“Constitutionally, Kamagega has ten ministries. Barasa amechukua ministries tano na mimi nimechukua tano. I am not a deputy governor, I am a co-governor,” he added.
Prior to his Monday statement, Savula claimed that he was forced to join the Azimio la Umoja Coalition in order to avoid arrest for his support for President-elect William Ruto.
“I have not mentioned it to anyone but today I will go public about it. It is the coercion from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) that forced me to support the Azimio coalition. They arrested me together with my two wives at night on fictitious charges,” he said at a funeral in Lugari on Saturday, adding that he has always supported Ruto.
