The daughter of jailed Hong Kong pro-democracy tycoon Jimmy Lai has raised alarm over her father’s worsening health in prison, saying his fingernails “sometimes fall off” and that his teeth are rotting.
Mr Lai, 78, has been in detention since December 2020 and faces the possibility of life imprisonment. Earlier this month, he was convicted of colluding with foreign forces under Hong Kong’s controversial national security law.

Hong Kong and Chinese authorities have denied that Mr Lai has been mistreated, insisting that he remains in “good health”.
A letter was seen from Mr Lai’s family urging UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to call for his release during an expected meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping next month.
