The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched an in-depth investigation into the suspected murder of Father John Maina, a revered Catholic priest from Igwamiti Parish in Nyahururu.
Fr. Maina had attended a high-profile religious event on April 27, 2025, the Silver Jubilee anniversary of Igwamiti Catholic Parish and the ordination of Father Simon Thuita. The event drew notable guests, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and a number of political figures.
Tragically, on May 15, 2025, Fr. Maina was discovered in a dire state by a motorcycle rider near the Diotomite stage along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway. The priest, injured and disoriented, claimed he had been abducted from Nyahururu. He was promptly rushed to St. Joseph’s Mission Hospital in Gilgil, where medical personnel noted visible injuries, particularly deep bruises on the left side of his head. Despite efforts to stabilize him, Fr. Maina succumbed to his injuries shortly after being admitted.
Following his death, the priest’s body was transferred to the Nyahururu Sub-County morgue for preservation and autopsy. On May 19, a post-mortem was conducted by government pathologist Dr. Ngulungu, whose preliminary report suggested that the head injuries were not likely the primary cause of death. Toxicology samples were collected to explore the possibility of poisoning or other foul play.
Emerging reports suggest that Fr. Maina may have been trailed by individuals allegedly demanding a share of money he received during the April 27 ceremony, funds reportedly gifted by former Deputy President Gachagua. Authorities have also uncovered claims that Fr. Maina feared for his life in the days leading up to his death, though no formal complaint was filed.
Investigators have recorded multiple witness statements and are currently analyzing forensic evidence to piece together the priest’s final movements. Detectives are treating the case as a targeted attack and are working to identify suspects.
The DCI has assured the public and the Church community that no stone will be left unturned in the pursuit of justice for Fr. Maina.
