The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched investigations into the torching of a Mazda CX-5 along Thika Road during Monday’s protests, saying detectives are actively pursuing individuals believed to have been involved in the incident.
In a statement issued after videos of the burning vehicle circulated widely online, the DCI confirmed that investigators had received and begun analyzing viral footage believed to contain images of some of the prime suspects connected to the incident.

According to the agency, the attack not only caused major property destruction but also placed lives at risk during the demonstrations.
“This incident not only endangered lives but also resulted in significant property damage, and investigations remain active,” the DCI stated.

The investigative agency further noted that detectives are currently following several leads aimed at identifying and arresting all individuals linked to the vehicle torching.
“Detectives are diligently pursuing crucial leads aimed at identifying and apprehending all those involved in this criminal act,” the statement added.
The incident occurred amid widespread protests and transport disruptions linked to rising fuel prices and the increasing cost of living, with demonstrations reported in several parts of Nairobi and other towns across the country.

The DCI has now appealed to members of the public to assist with investigations by sharing information that may help identify suspects captured in the viral videos.
The National Police Service reiterated its commitment to maintaining public safety and protecting property, warning that individuals using protests as cover for criminal acts would face legal action.
