Following Italy’s 3-0 Finalissima defeat to Argentina, Daniele De Rossi seemed unconcerned, claiming that Roberto Mancini is “the perfect person” for the position.
The Azzurri were unable to get going in their Finalissima match against Lionel Scaloni’s side on Wednesday, falling behind 2-0 after 45 minutes. They were easily overwhelmed by an energised Argentina side, and it was a sad end to an era for an Italy team who had only won Euro 2020 a year before.
De Rossi gave a brief reaction to the loss to Argentina in an interview with Corriere della Sera.
“I didn’t realize the disparity between the two teams was so significant.”
“There have always been players in Italy and we still have them now. If one thinks one has two years to prepare for an event, one can take time to plan. One prepares the matches, then we will see what happens on the pitch.
“But it also depends on you: whether you want to see beyond the horizon or you just want a draw with Germany now. These are things that the coach will evaluate and I think he will change something.”
Following Italy’s devastating loss to North Macedonia in their World Cup play-off earlier this year, Mancini decided not to retire, meaning he’ll have to supervise a second Azzurri rebuild in four years.
A number of young players, such as Gianluca Scamacca and Sandro Tonali, are trying to break into the first team ahead of Euro 2024.
