Two city pickpocketers risk death sentence for stealing a Huawei phone valued at Ksh 18,000.
Newtown Livoli and Brian Ochieng who appeared before Chief Magistrate Lucus Onyina had to be cautioned by the magistrate before taking the plea that their offence carries a death sentence on conviction.
“Before taking this plea, it is the duty of this court to inform you that you risk a death sentence if you plead guilty to the offence. This is a very serious offence and you have a right to legal representation by a lawyer of your choice” cautioned the magistrate.
The two were charged with robbery with violence contrary to section 296 of the Penal Code.
The two accused persons were said to have robbed Peter Kariuki Munene of his mobile phone valued at Ksh 18,000 by threatening him.
The said robbery took place on April 23, 2023, along Cardinal Otunga Street in Nairobi.
The accused persons however heeded the Magistrate’s caution and pleaded not guilty.
They were released on Ksh 400,000 bond.
