Death toll surpasses 1,600 as positive cases fluctuate

Kenya’s COVID-19 death toll has risen to 1,604 after 11 more patients died from complications arising from the virus. – By Gerald Gekara.

However, Kenya’s fatality rate still remains low at 1.7 percent out of the total number of positive cases.

Over the same period, 404 people have tested positive for the virus, from a sample size of 4,878 tested in the last 24 hours, bringing to 92,459 the number of confirmed positive cases in the country.

Of the cases, 364 are Kenyans while 40 are foreigners.

Nairobi continues to lead with (118), Kilifi (110), Mombasa (66), Makueni (26), Nakuru (23), Kiambu (12), Kisumu (11), Turkana (9), Kwale (5), Nyeri (5), Siaya (4), Kajiado (4), Murang’a (3), Machakos (2), while Meru, Kakamega, Kericho, Kirinyaga, Marsabit , and Lamu each had (1) case.

527 patients have recovered from the disease, 408 from the Home-Based Care Program, while 119 have been discharged from various hospitals. Total recoveries now stand at 73,979.

There are 871 patients admitted in various health facilities countrywide and 6,284 on Home Based Isolation and Care. 46 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 23 of whom are on ventilatory support, and 17 on supplemental oxygen. 6 are on observation.

Another 46 patients are separately on supplementary oxygen out of whom 35 are in the general wards. 11 are in the High Dependency Unit (HDU).

Hopes of acquiring the vaccine in the country remain high even as the USA begun its vaccine program roll out with its health care workers.
