Delayed justice as trial of cops in Baby Pendo killing drags on

The family of Baby Samantha Pendo and over 40 survivors of 2017 postelection violence in Kisumu will have to wait longer for justice.

The Director of Public Prosecution, Renson Ingoga today successfully applied to have plea taking against 11 senior police officers deferred even though the court earlier on directed the officers to face charges of Crimes against humanity raging from murder, torture and rape.

The former DPP Noordin Haji had in 2022 directed the officers be tried based on the principle of command responsibility.

This was after an inquest ruled that police officers were liable for baby pendos murder and other violations meted on Innocent Kenyans in Kisumu

It’s the first time the Kenyan court will be charging suspects under the crimes against humanity which is under romes statute

International justice mission Kenya, Amnesty Kenya, LSK, Utu Wetu and kNCHR speaking after the ruling expressed their disappointment saying it’s unfortunate the families have waited for justice since2017, called for expeditious trial.
