Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was shocked after being attacked and hit by a man in central Copenhagen on Friday, according to Ritzau news agency, citing police and the prime minister’s office.
It was unclear if the attacker injured Frederiksen.
Ritzau confirmed that the man was arrested as a result of the incident.
Prime Minister Frederiksen expressed shock in a written statement issued shortly after the attack. While visibly shaken, she assured the public that she was unharmed.
The Copenhagen police confirmed the incident, but, like the Prime Minister’s Office, made no further comment.
Frederiksen has been actively campaigning alongside the Social Democrats’ lead candidate, Christel Schaldemose, ahead of Sunday’s EU Parliament election.
Schaldemose clarified to Ritzau, a Danish news agency, that the Prime Minister’s appearance at Kultorvet was unrelated to her campaign.
As of Friday night, the Social Democrats’ press office had not commented on the attack.
