Deposed Myanmar Leader Jailed

Myanmar’s deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced to two years in prison.

This marks the beginning of the first judgments in a series of cases that could see her imprisoned for decades are handed down.

The 76-year-old was originally sentenced to four years in prison after the military seized power in a coup on February 1, but his term has since been reduced to two years.

The charges, taken together, are expected to bring potential penalties of more than 100 years in prison.

Ms Suu Kyi has not been seen in public since her incarceration, and the proceedings have been place behind closed doors.

On Monday, she was sentenced to four years in prison for inciting and violating COVID-19 rules.

Ms Suu Kyi has been charged with corruption, possessing unlicensed walkie-talkies, and breaking the official secrets act, among other things.
