The 41st International Association of Science Parks and Areas of Innovation (IASP) World Conference has officially commenced, uniting global leaders, innovators, and policymakers at the Edge Convention Centre in Nairobi from September 24-27, 2024.
The conference, inaugurated by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, focuses on the critical intersection of demographics, technology, and entrepreneurship in shaping future economies.
In his opening remarks, DP Gachagua emphasized the significance of technological advancements in addressing urgent global challenges such as climate change, urbanization, and social inequality.
“Our future is being shaped by the intersection of technology and human ingenuity,” he stated, highlighting the transformative potential of emerging industries.
With Kenya investing billions in digital infrastructure—including 100,000 km of fiber optic cable and the establishment of 1,450 digital hubs—the conference underscores the country’s commitment to digital transformation and economic growth through its Bottom Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
Eng. Tanui, the Permanent Secretary for the State Department of ICT & Digital Economy and President of the IASP Africa Chapter, reiterated the importance of bridging the gap between demographic opportunities and technological capabilities.
He noted that innovation ecosystems require ongoing collaboration among stakeholders to thrive.
Prof. Raphael Munavu, Chairman of the Konza Technopolis Development Authority, stressed the dynamic nature of innovation, urging collaboration to harness the benefits of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
IASP President Lena Miranda pointed out the conference’s relevance in addressing the challenges of an aging global population while empowering youth in regions like Africa and Asia. She called for enhanced collaboration to build a sustainable talent and innovation base to drive global economic growth.
With delegates from over 400 science parks and innovation hubs expected to attend, the conference not only showcases Kenya’s leadership in innovation but also sets the stage for impactful discussions on the future of technology and entrepreneurship.
