Journalists To Moderate Deputy President’s Debate

The session will take place on Tuesday, July 19 from 8 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).

The Presidential Debates Secretariat announced the journalists who will moderate the debate between UDA running mate Rigathi Gachagua and Azimio’s Martha Karua on Wednesday, July 13.

According to a press release, the session between Gachagua and Karua will be moderated by Sophia Wanuna of KTN News and James Smart of NTV.

The session will take place on Tuesday, July 19 from 8 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).

“The moderators have been selected based on rigorous criteria that , among others, endear the principles of impartiality, fairness and objectivity, a strong understanding of the major issues of this election,” the statement read in part.

Notably, the debate will be preceded by a debate between the running mates of presidential candidates who received less than 5% in three recent polls.

The debate between Justina Wamae of the Roots Party and Ruth Mutua of Agano which will run from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm will be moderated by TV47 presenter Linda Alela and Jacob Kioria of KBC.

Trevor Ombija of Citizen TV will moderate the panel discussions that will take place before and after both debates. Moderators will be expected to perform certain tasks and follow certain rules.

“Moderators will select the questions to be asked ad shall share the same with the candidates. They will not meet with any of the campaign teams or the candidates,” the organizers declared.

The secretariat reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a fair debate guided by the principles of integrity, independence, and accountability.

The presidential candidates will square off in the 2022 Presidential Debate a week after the deputy president designates debate their plans for the country.
